The Great North Woods Vintage Snowmobile Race Series - 2012 Rules
All 2012 rule changes are Italicized
We will be tracking race results with a new computerized race lap counting/timing system.
All racers will be required to purchase a transponder ($10) in order to race and will be eligible for individual race trophies. However, in order to accumulate Series points and qualify for Series Final trophies:
General Series Classes:
You will need to become a' Vintage Fanatic'. A fee of $40 per season will be charged. This fee will award you the following benefits:
- Reduced pre-registration fees ($25.00 savings for each sled for the 5-race series) - does not include class jump
- Reduced race day class jump fees ($5.00 savings each)
- 1 free transponder ($10.00 value)
- You will be given a password so that you can access the race results on the Great North Woods Vintage Race Website - a benefit given only to 'Vintage Fanatics'.
Powderpuff, Youth & 120 Series Classes:
You will need to become a 'Vintage Fanatic'. A fee of $10 per season will be charged. This fee will award you the following benefits:
- 1 free transponder ($10.00 value)
- You will be given a password so that you can access the race results on the Great North Woods Vintage Race Website - a benefit given only to 'Vintage Fanatics'.
You must participate in at least 4 out of the 5 series races. Series points are based on each racer's top 4 final results. Those participating in all 5 races will have their lowest point score dropped.
*Please note - points will be awarded for each of the five series races: (Pittsburg, Colebrook, Errol, Stratford, and the Balsams). A series trophy will be awarded to each race class based on race standings at the conclusion of the Balsams race.
Points Schedule as follows:
- 1st place = 6 pts.
- 2nd place = 5 pts.
- 3rd place = 4 pts.
- 4th place = 3 pts.
- 5th place = 2 pts.
- 6th place = 1 pt.
- 7th place on = 0 pts.
General Information
Green Flag: Start of Race
Red Flag: Stop immediately, and maintain position on track. If you have accidentally passed someone under red flag please move back and maintain your correct position.
Black Flag: Penalty or Disqualification. Go directly to the pits and stop. Race Personnel will address the penalty with you. Disqualified sleds will forfeit entry fees.
White Flag: One lap remaining
Checkered Flag: End of race.
Yellow Flag: Slow down and avoid any obstacles. Proceed single file without passing. Maintain track position, until clear of the incident. One lap penalty for passing on yellow flag.
Absolutely No Crossing Of The Track: On foot or by machine during qualifying runs or feature race. Track personnel will assist any person or sled across the track during a Yellow Flag lap only. This includes towing to pit area.
Pushing, Bumping or Hitting: If deemed intentional you will be Black Flagged and disqualified.
Starting Procedure: Qualifying heats will be motocross style, racers lined up to start line with engines running, at the drop of the flag begin racing.
Feature races will be moto-cross style start, or rolling start.
Moto-cross: All machines will line up at the starting line, leave engine running. At the drop of the green flag racing will commence.
Rolling: Machines will be lead around the track and at the start line will begin racing.
Race Length:
Qualifier: 5 laps Last Chance Qualifier: 5 laps (example: 2 qualifying heats of 14 machines each; the top six of each heat move on to the finals. The remaining 16 sleds run a last chance race to qualify for finals. Feature Races: 10 laps (length of all races is subject to change based on track length and conditions).
If Your Sled Stops Running:
You will have the option of working on it in the infield only, an official tow vehicle will tow you back to the pits only if it is safe to do so.If You Protest A Competitor's Sled:
You must put up $100.00 to the race committee. The protested sled owner will be responsible for head, exhaust, or carburetor teardown of their own sled. If the owner refuses, the sled will be disqualified and fees will be forfeited. If the protested sled is found to be illegal, your money will be refunded, the protested sled will be disqualified and his fees will be forfeited. If the protested sled is deemed legal, you forfeit your $100.00 to the Great North Woods Vintage Snowmobile Race Series.All penalties and/or disqualifications:
By race officials will be accepted by the participants and will be uncontestable.
Officials Rulings:
The officials have the last say. The rules are there to keep racing fun, safe, and competitive.
RACE RULES FAN COOLED
Snowmobile:
- Must be a production line model, Offered as a 1974 or earlier model year, with a date of manufacture 1973 or earlier. Sleds with a 1974 date of manufacture DO NOT QUALIFY to race. A D.O.M. tag, stamp, or other suitable form of proof must be available if requested. No limited production R&D models. Must Be Fan Cooled!
- Original style ignition for year, make, and model.
- No performance kits ex: heads, cylinders, exhaust, ignition, or carburetors.
- Tether switch is mandatory; it must be working before, during, and after the race. Tether must be clipped to clothing or glove. This will be strictly enforced. Tether cord must also be attached to person when warming up/ tuning on stand!
Motor Regulations:
- Absolutely no reed induction motors.
- Motor must be 1974 or older and an available option for the chassis entered in the race.
- Original clutch or Comet duster 94C or Power Bloc 50/ALT.
- Carburetors are original 'style' for year, make and model, no reed induction, however, re-jetting is permissible. If you have a non diaphragm carburetor you must be able to prove this was original equipment for year, make and model sled in the competition. Walboro WF carburetors can only be used if they came on the particular year, make and model sled used in the competition, and if used, must retain internal fuel pump. No use of external fuel pumps except for Mikuni.
- Exhaust must be original or stock replacement. No aftermarket performance exhaust. No oem performance kits.
- Pistons are original or stock replacement, up to .050" oversize allowed.
- No port grinding other than cylinder chamfering after boring. Must have stock port sizing.
Racers among the top 3 finishers may be chosen at random and are subject to a carburetor inspection, compression test, and removal of spark plugs, exhaust and carbs, to check bore, stroke, compression, and porting. This is in an effort to keep the racing action FAIR and Fun for all involved. Please be accommodating here. The racer and one crew member will be allowed in the inspection area with 2 race tech officials. If the machine fails inspection, it will be disqualified and all fees forfeited.
Chassis:
- 1974 model year or older.
- Chaincase must be original
- Skis are original or stock replacement. You can use skis from another manufacturer as long as no newer than 1974. No aluminum skis or plastic ski skins allowed. Ski tips MUST have protection around hoops and ski tip edge.
- Carbide runners are allowed to original skis. No length limit but only 1 per ski. No additional keels or carbides on skis.
- Spreaders are allowed to 3" per side
- No leaf spring supports of any kind. You MAY add or subtract leafs
- Snow flaps must be in place and measured to no more than 1" off the ground when sat on, and must be made of rigid material. (tractor trailer mud flaps, cut to fit, work good here)
Fuel Tanks:
- Must be factory style fuel tank and secured safely. Any fabricated tank has to pass tech inspection before being allowed to race.
Suspension:
- Must be original or same style offered for the chassis of the particular sled from the factory.
- Must be original. They may be reinforced but cannot be extended or raised. Hooks are allowed. No bending of handlebars allowed whether it’s straightening or turning. No bars other than stock!
Handlebars:
Track:
- Original or stock replacement. Up to 3/4 inch lug height
- Any machines that had cleats from the factory must be riveted on and not bolted. All rivets must be short and made of steel., They cannot be sharpened, ends cannot be welded shut, and they must be original size, and design.
- No traction devices of any size allowed in stock and pure stock classes.
- Tracks can be changed from rubber to rubber and also from cleated to cleated. No changing from cleated to rubber, or rubber to cleated unless that particular year, make, and model was available from the factory with that option. You must provide proof.
- You may change gear ratio, clutch springs and weights. Secondary clutch must be stock for year, make, and model
- Belts may be different but clutch center to center distance must be maintained to stock specs.
Seat:
- No late model seats, no springs, or suspension seats, SEAT MUST BE STOCK APPEARING. Absolutely no risers, no extra foam!
Driver:
- Chest protector recommended for safety in all classes.
- Agrees to accept all decisions of the race officials unconditionally.
- No alcohol or drugs allowed
- Must provide your own ABC type fire extinguisher in pit area.
- Must be 18 years of age or older. (A picture ID with date of birth on it will be required at race registration.)
- AN APPROVED HELMET WITH SHIELD OR GOGGLES IS MANDATORY, NO EXCEPTIONS. EYE PROTECTION INFRACTIONS WILL RESULT IN A BLACK FLAG. NO SAFETY GLASSES!
Snowmobile Operation:
- No on track major repairs allowed
- Driver should attempt to get snowmobile into infield, and wait for tow vehicle. Driver can change belt, or plugs in the infield, and re-enter race.
- Excessive speed or horseplay in the pit area will not be tolerated, and may result in a penalty or disqualification.
- If you lose your hood during the race you can no longer be scored thus are disqualified if you cannot put it back on.
- Snowmobile needs to be on a safety stand in pit area, or on starting line for warm ups. All safety stands must have a backboard large enough to block the entire track to prevent any track clips or debris from injuring anyone. If sled is running on a stand tether needs to be clipped to a person!
Pre-assigned Race Numbers:
Please contact the race chairman to confirm your race number. Number(s) must be a contrasting color to the sled, for visibility, and must be at least 6 by 2 ½ inches in size BLOCK STYLE affixed to both sides of the cowling. Racers must supply materials for the numbers. If you raced last season your #s will be reserved for you during pre-registration only. To race in the Great North Woods Races you will also be required to have the accompanying letter on both sides of your hood to designate your primary class (ex: 24F). This season, if you don’t have the letter you will not be racing. This is to help us with race day organization. If your # cannot be read from a distance you will not be racing so please don't show up with spray painted #s.
To help designate classes a number and letter combination has been established.
- Single up to 250cc A
- Single up to 295cc B
- Single up to 400cc C
- Pure Stock single S
- Twin up to 295cc F
- Twin up to 340 cc G
- Twin up to 440cc H
- Free Air Mod to 440cc M
- Free Air stock to 340cc D
Check In -Check in and registration begin at 7:30 AM. Please try to pre register, this will save you money, us valuable race time, and lots of race day hassle, as well as guarantees you a race spot. Please be checked in and ready by 9:00. There will be a $10 additional charge for registration from 9 AM to 9:30 AM and absolutely no registering after 9:30 AM. Racing starts at 10 AM sharp! Tech from 7:30 to 9:45.
Entry Fees:
- Transponder $10.00 each - Mandatory - 1 for each operator - good for 1 season only.
- Pre-Registration (Note: You still have to check in on race day even if pre-registered)
- $35.00 per sled
- To enter same sled in additional classes a fee of $20.00 will be required for each additional class entered.
- Race Day Registration
- $45.00 per sled.
- To enter same sled in additional classes a fee of $25.00 will be required for each additional class entered.
Race Classes:
ONE LUNGERS (Single Cylinder) STOCK:
- Up to 250cc single fan cooled & rotary sleds
- Up to 295cc single fan cooled & rotary sleds
- Up to 400cc single fan cooled & rotary sleds
- Pure Stock Single- HR size carburetor
- 4 stroke 120cc mod class
TWIN CYLINDER STOCK:
- Up to 295cc twin fan cooled & rotary sleds
- Up to 340cc twin fan cooled & rotary sleds
- Up to 440cc twin fan cooled & rotary sleds
- Powderpuff up to 440 fan cooled no mod sleds
- Youth 14 to 17 yrs old to 340cc fan cooled
- Youth 10 to 13 yrs old to 340cc fan cooled
FREE AIR:
- Up to 340 free air or fan stock
- Up to 440 free air or fan mod
STOCK FREE AIR:
- These rules are in addition to all stock class rules
- Up to 340 free air or fan stock
- Up to and including 1974 model year
- Singles, twins, or triples
- No traction devices
- Chest protector suggested for safety
- Can have aluminum skis if stock
- Rotary and reed valve engines allowed if they were available in that chassis and year.
MOD FREE AIR:
- These rules are in addition to all stock class rules
- Up to 1978 free air or fan engine and chassis
- Leaf spring front end
- Up to 440 cc triple plus an overbore of .050, or a single or twin with a limit of 460cc calculated through bore and stroke
- Studs allowed 2 per track pitch no more than 3/8” taller than the track lug, if they show up taller you will be grinding or not racing
- Exhaust is up to your imagination
- Engine mods open to your imagination, but must have a 78 or earlier engine free air or fan only.
- Can use modern skis
- Can switch tracks and rear suspensions
- You can run rotary or reed valve if the engine had them no add on
- Tek Vest required
PURE STOCK:
- These rules are in addition to all stock class rules
- Single cylinder only
- Stock sled up to and including 1974 model year with a date of manufacture 1973
- HR size carb and port maximum
- Stock carb for your sled
- No traction devices
- Round bar runner only for skis no carbide or square stock
- No ski spreaders
- Stock clutch only no aftermarket replacement types
- No handlebar hooks
- Chest protector suggested for safety
NOTE: Open class sleds are not permitted in the powderpuff or youth class!
POWDERPUFF ADDITIONAL RULES:
- These rules are in addition to all stock class rules
- Ages 18 and up.
- Up to 440cc fan cooled to 1974
- $25. Entry fee. One 10 lap race
- Chest protector suggested for safety
YOUTH ADDITIONAL RULES:
- These rules are in addition to all stock class rules
- 10 - 13 year old class one 10 lap race $15.00
- 14 - 17 year old class one 10 lap race $15.00
- 1974 model year or older
- Fan cooled single or twin to 340cc
- Parent/guardian must be present and sign waiver form
- Chest protector suggested for safety
4 STROKE 120cc STOCK RULES:
- These rules are in addition to all stock class rules
- 4 Stroke 120cc engine
- No track studs
- Can have plastic skis with carbide runners
- Can be any year or make
- Engine mods are not permitted
- Governor mods permitted
- Gear Changes permitted
- 2-5 lap race depending on track length
- Must have working tether
- Ski tips must be padded
- Parent/legal guardian must be present at race/ sign liability form
- 5-9 years old $15.00 per child per race
- $10.00 transponder fee per person/per season
4 STROKE 120cc MOD RULES:
- These rules are in addition to all stock class rules
- Up to 200cc 4 Stroke engine
- Can use track studs
- Can have plastic skis with carbide runners
- Can be any year or make
- Engine mods are permitted
- Clutching/ governor mods permitted
- 2-5 lap race depending on track length
- Must have working tether
- Ski tips must be padded
- Parent/legal guardian must be present at race/ sign liability form
- 5-9 years old $15.00 per child per race
- $10.00 transponder fee per person/per season
- Chest protector mandatory for safety because track studs are permitted
The first, second, and third place winners in each class will be awarded trophy's for each race whether entered for the whole series or not. Series points will be awarded to those racers entered into the whole series - highest total points wins the series trophy in each class. Trophies will also be awarded to second and third places for series.
